Matcha matcha matcha…. Everyone is talking about it. We all know where to go to buy one from the high street, but how can we make this green powerhouse at home? Well, the truth be told, there is no set way, there are traditional ways, and more modern ways of making the drink, but no wrong way… I like to pride myself on my traditional technique of making a matcha latte… so let me spill my secret on making the creamiest matcha you could get, better than the sugar-filled ones from your favourite green coffee shop.
What you need:
☁️ Ceremonial grade matcha powder (This is a must, cheap matcha powders are full of sugar and do NOT taste good. If it is a bright green, it's a good sign, no yellow around here)
☁️ Matcha Bowl (Not specifically, you could use a normal bowl, but something to whisk in)
☁️ Bamboo Matcha Whisk
☁️ Sieve (a must)
☁️ Hot water
☁️ Milk of choice
☁️ Ice
... and now here's how to make the creamiest matcha!
Start by sieving a teaspoon of matcha powder, ensuring all lumps and clumps are out of the powder.
Add 1 tablespoon of room-temperature water to the powder
Whisk into a wet paste
Add 1 tablespoon of warm water to the paste
Whisk vigorously for 1 minute. Whisk in a 'W' shape, ensuring a foamy layer on top. ( Tip - Use your wrist, not your arm )
Raise the whisk and whisk out the air bubbles on the top layer, making it lovely and creamy.
Add vanilla, agave, or your sweetener of choice and whisk again! (Don't put it at the bottom of the milk; this way, you get even more flavour for your drink.)
Add ice, your favourite milk to a glass and pour your matcha over!
GIVE IT A MIX!!! You don't want to just drink milk!
Enjoy!
A lot of people ask what matcha is…. Is it a green smoothie? Is it coffee? Is it even nice!?
Matcha is a type of powdered green tea made from specially grown and processed tea leaves, traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped and then discarded, matcha involves consuming the entire leaf in powdered form, making it more concentrated in nutrients and flavour. Matcha has a rich, earthy flavour with notes of natural sweetness, a hint of bitterness, and a smooth umami finish that sets it apart from regular green tea. You can add a sweetener to lessen the bitterness in your drink!
